World of Tanks Update: Ranked Battles, Graphics Upgrades and More!

World-of-Tanks-on-PS4-1

With the introduction of Ranked Battles, World of Tanks just got a lot more competitive…

Wargaming just launched a massive update for their Massive Multiplayer Online tank combat game World of Tanks. Update 9.19 introduces the Beta for a new competitive gameplay mode, Ranked Battles, adds new content, including tanks, consumables, equipment, and optimizes menu layout.

Ranked Battles

Ranked Battles will see the same 15v15 gameplay as the ordinary game, however the new ranking and matchmaking conditions will improve the experience for players looking to play on a competitive level. All players will be ranked in accordance with their in-game performances, which will give skilled players more competitive opponents and fewer novice teammates. Ranked matches will only feature Tier X tanks, as opposed to standard matches that allow for a range of tank tiers, putting all ranked players on a level playing field. This will also limit Ranked Battles to only the most experienced players: reaching Tier X is a time-consuming task, requiring players to level up through all ten tiers in any given vehicle line.

Players have a lot to gain from Ranked Battles. The update will be introducing a new currency, War Bonds, with can be used to purchase two types of new items: Improved Equipment and Directives. Both items are usable in both standard play and ranked battles. Improved Equipment offer small advantages over their standard counterparts, which provide improvements and unique attributes to vehicles. Directives can improve crew performance or the effect of the equipment on a vehicle. Unlike Improved equipment, which are permanent, Directives are consumables which can be used only once.

The low cost of entry to Wargaming.net's World of Tanks makes it easy for new players to log in and get rolling.

With Ranked Battles, World of Tanks looks to enter the realm of competitive online gaming. Games like Starcraft and DOTA have created cult followings through their competitive online play. Competitive play increases spectatorship of games in the same way that competitive sports do, which can mean big money for game developers and competitive gamers alike. Professional Starcraft and DOTA players and commentators can make six to seven figures through tournament winnings and sponsorships. Competitive events can have thousands of attendees and hundreds of thousands of online viewers, making them comparable to professional sports matches. By opening up ranked matches for World of Tanks to individual players and heavily incentivizing participation, World of Tanks is likely looking to break into this lucrative market.

Other Updates

In World of Tanks, the details truly matter. With Update 9.19, twelve tanks received reworked HD models. Voiceovers have also been added for female crew members. Three variants of the U.S. Sherman tank have been buffed with better mantlet armor. Menu interface has been updated to make missions easier to view. You can find the full list of updates here.

Update 9.19: A hit or a flop?

The success of a modern video game, especially a competitive MMO like World of Tanks, depends on the feedback from its players. Will fans love Ranked Battles that give an even playing field for skilled players? Will Ranked Battle rewards give an unfair advantage to players with Tier X tanks? Wargaming is assuring fans that their feedback will be valued as they test the Ranked Battle Beta, and knowing the World of Tanks gaming community, they will receive plenty of it.
