Among myriad shooters available to gamers, Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad stands out as being one of the most realistic portrayers of combat along the Eastern Front. While many modern games focus on delivering blockbuster-esque moments, Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad seeks to attract players through the pulse-pounding and intense feelings that only a realistic simulator can offer.

Through its use of detail-oriented and accurate combat mechanics, the gameplay in Red Orchestra 2 is likely to be very different than anything a gamer who enjoys shooters has experienced before. The game features several different gameplay elements that contribute to adding realism and intensity to the battles.

Limited HUD

During a match in Red Orchestra 2, gamers should not expect to be spoon-fed details about their battlefield status. They must rely instead on their own instincts to give themselves the best chance of surviving each heated battle. While most shooters hold each player’s hand by providing them with ammo counts, health meters, and radar screens, Red Orchestra 2 does the exact opposite. Forget how many rounds you shot off in that last skirmish? Well you better check your magazines lest you be left with an empty chamber the next time you draw a bead on an enemy. With animations that show the player’s character weighing each magazine in hand during the reload process, Red Orchestra 2 does not skimp on the small details.

First-Person Cover System

Nearly any object in each map, no matter how big or small, is available for a player to seek cover behind. This greatly contributes to the intensity of each battle. Players in cover are then able to peek around their cover in order to pop off some shots, or they may choose to fire blindly around the cover; providing more protection but far less accurate shot placement. However, simply being behind cover does not guarantee safety from enemy fire. The size and material of the cover also come into play with bullets easily ripping through some obstacles such as wooden barricades.

Health System

In many modern shooters, an injured player will eventually have their health regenerated to a certain extent. The same cannot be said for Red Orchestra 2. When a player is injured, there is no magical regeneration or health pick-up that will allow a player to recover. It is possible for non-fatal gunshot wounds to be bandaged to prevent further blood loss and eventual death, but players must be very careful if they want to survive on the battlefield for any significant amount of time.

Suppression

Suppressing fire is a common real-world tactic during combat. It forces enemy troops to take cover and allows for allies to advance their positions or fallback to a safer firing position. Tripwire Interactive, the developers of Red Orchestra 2, made sure to include a suppression system in the game. When a player is near sustained enemy fire, their screen will shift into a blur, movement will be slowed down, and colors will lose vibrancy. Suppression can prove to be a very effective strategy during intense and closely contested battles.

Ballistics

Although there are several examples of shooters out there that take firearm ballistics into account, Red Orchestra 2 takes that feature to a new level of realism. Bullet drop and spin are both taken into account in order to determine accuracy. This mechanic especially comes into play for players using bolt-action rifles during a match and on maps that do not focus on close quarters combat. Red Orchestra 2 also gives players the ability to adjust their rifle sights on the fly to accurately place long-range shots.

All of these features and mechanics truly set Red Orchestra 2 apart from other shooters on the market. The developers had a goal of delivering one of the most realistic depictions of WWII combat possible and it is easy to see that they met and exceeded that objective. Gamers who enjoy a challenge and extremely intense and high-stress simulations of combat will quickly fall in love with the hyper-realistic gameplay of Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad.
